Dental Implants

Replace missing teeth with natural looking dental implants.

Dental Implants can be used to replace missing teeth, whether it’s a single tooth or an entire upper or lower arch. They closely mimic the look and function of natural teeth and are a great alternative to dentures or bridges.

To determine if dental implants are a suitable option for you,  book a consultation with us today.

What is a dental implant?

A dental implant is an artificial tooth made out of a ceramic crown, an abutment and an implant screw which are joined together and anchored to the jaw. Dental implants look like natural teeth, are very comfortable and are the best replacement for a missing tooth or teeth. Since they are firmly secured to the jaw, you will be able to still eat your favourite food and brush and floss normally.

When compared to alternatives (such as dental bridges or dentures), implants feature several advantages:

  • look more natural
  • are more comfortable than dentures
  • prevent bone loss in the jaw
  • prevent the formation of hollowed or collapsed cheeks following tooth extraction
  • unlike bridges, the adjacent teeth are spared from cutting and shaping
  • are easier to clean and maintain

What does it involve?

Initially, a consultation appointment and facial radiographs will be required to assess the suitability for dental implants. They are generally placed in 2 stages under local anaesthesia with the whole process taking between 3 to 6 months. For complex presentations, the dentist will be able to refer you to an appropriate specialist for management.

Maintenance

When properly planned and maintained, dental implants can last many years. Dental plaque can accumulate around implants and components may loosen or damage over time. Thus, meticulous home care as well as regular maintenance at the dentist are essential for long-term success with dental implants.

Am I a candidate for dental implants?

To discover if dental implants are a suitable option for you, we recommend a consultation with one of our experienced dentists.
At your consultation our dentists will determine if you are a candidate for a dental implant by assessing your oral hygiene, the bone quality and volume in the area and other influencing factors.

What are dental implants made from?

Dental implants are made from three different components, the titanium implant which is placed into your jaw, the abutment (a metal component that is screwed into the implant) and a ceramic crown.

How long will my dental implant last?

Dental implants are a long-term solution, however how long they last will depend on how they are cared for and the individual implant.
Generally, with proper care and maintenance, dental implants last around 25 years. Depending on what type of crown you have attached you may have to replace it after five – 15 years.

How do I care for my dental implant?

Our dentists will advise you on how to care for your dental implant as you heal. Ongoing, it’s important to practise good dental hygiene by brushing and flossing twice a day and using mouthwash if it is recommended by your dentist.
