Wisdom teeth (also called third molars) normally erupt between the ages of 18 and 25 years of age. For many people, the emergence of these molars can cause great pain and discomfort.

In the case of lower wisdom teeth, many dentists often refer patients to oral surgeons, leading to long wait times and increased costs. Our dentists’ extensive surgical training and experience save our patients both time and money, as they avoid the need for additional consultations, appointment delays and higher fees associated with seeing an oral surgeon.

You may need to have wisdom teeth removed if your jaw doesn’t have enough space to accommodate their growth. Removal of wisdom teeth is a very common procedure and our dentists are trained to properly assess and manage most wisdom teeth presentations.

Whilst not all wisdom teeth cause problems, the majority do. It’s important to have them assessed early to prevent greater damage later in life. REASONS WISDOM TEETH NEED TO BE REMOVED

There are many reasons our dentist will recommend your wisdom teeth to be removed.

Infection – Sometimes the eruption of wisdom teeth can trigger infection at the top of the tooth. Infection can cause pain and swelling.
Crowding – When wisdom teeth erupt they can push other teeth out of position if there isn’t sufficient space.
Pain – Infection or pressure exerted by an impacted or erupting wisdom tooth can cause pain in the area.
Cysts – Cysts are sacks of fluid and can form around the wisdom tooth and affect nearby teeth and gums.
Ulcer – When insufficient space is available, upper wisdom teeth can push into the cheeks and form painful ulcers.
Food Trap – The area between the wisdom tooth and the adjacent tooth can be very difficult to clean, leading to cavities on both teeth.
Resorption cavity – Wisdom teeth can apply significant pressure to adjacent teeth and in some cases can lead to the development of a cavity on the adjacent tooth with the need for removal of both teeth.

PROCEDURE

At Pimpama Dental, we are able to remove most wisdom teeth under local anaesthesia. Our compassionate team will always make sure that you are as comfortable as possible during the procedure. If you do not wish to be awake for the surgery or the wisdom teeth are very complex, our dentists will be able to refer you to an appropriate specialist to have them removed under general anaesthesia.

How much does wisdom teeth surgery cost?

The cost of your wisdom teeth surgery will depend on the complexity of the surgery. At your initial consultation, we will provide you with a treatment plan and quote outlining the cost of the surgery.

Is wisdom tooth surgery painful?

Wisdom tooth surgery can be undertaken with local or general anaesthetic, so you won’t feel any pain during surgery.

After surgery and during recovery you may experience some discomfort, swelling and some bruising around the area. Our dentists will provide you with post-operative instructions and prescribe appropriate pain medication to make sure your recovery is as quick and comfortable as possible.

Are your dentists trained to remove wisdom teeth?

Dr Vidimce and Dr Quitral have undergone additional training in removal of more complex wisdom teeth and oral surgery.

How long does it take to recover from wisdom teeth surgery?

It generally takes 3-7 days to recover following wisdom teeth surgery.

To reduce the chance of infection, it’s important to keep the area as clean as possible after wisdom teeth surgery. You will receive post-operative instructions and tools to keep the area clean and to minimise your recovery time.

During recovery you will need to adopt a diet of soft food or liquid until the area starts to heal. Hot foods aren’t recommended as they can contribute to infection. We also don’t recommend drinking from a straw.
